SS316 stainless steel contains added molybdenum compared to SS304, which is what gives it noticeably better resistance to corrosion, pitting and rust — the reason it is often called "marine grade" and used in coastal or high-humidity environments.
Bangalore isn't coastal, but it does get a genuine monsoon season with sustained humidity and rain exposure for outdoor-facing balcony and window cables. Over several years, that exposure is exactly where SS304 is more likely to show surface rust or pitting first, especially at cable ends and anchor points.
SS316 typically costs more per sq ft than SS304 for the same diameter and construction, because the raw material itself costs more. It is a legitimate trade-off, not a scam — the question is whether the longer expected lifespan is worth the difference for your specific installation.
Ask the installer to state the grade explicitly in writing (SS304 or SS316) rather than just "stainless steel," and ask whether the cable has a PVC or nylon coating, which adds a further layer of protection regardless of grade.

For long-term outdoor installations (balconies, exterior windows) most installers recommend SS316 for its better corrosion resistance. For sheltered interior applications the case is less clear-cut — ask your installer to explain the trade-off for your specific opening.
No — visually they are near-identical when new. The difference only becomes apparent after years of weather exposure, which is why it matters to get the grade confirmed in writing at the time of purchase.
A PVC or nylon coating adds a protective layer but doesn't change the base metal's corrosion resistance. Grade and coating are separate decisions, not substitutes for each other.
